How to choose a shower chair or stool (and toilet riser) for a safe bathroom

Silla de ducha con respaldo en un baño moderno y luminoso

The bathroom is one of the places with the highest risk of falls at home, especially for older people or those with reduced mobility. Adapting it with the right technical aids—a shower chair or stool, a toilet raiser, or a commode chair—provides safety and independence. We explain how to choose each one.

1. Shower chair or stool

It allows showering while seated, safely and without the risk of slipping. When choosing, consider:

  • With or without backrest: The backrest provides more stability and comfort; without a backrest, it is more compact.
  • With or without side handles: Handles help with sitting down and standing up.
  • Adjustable height and non-slip ferrules on the legs.
  • Water-resistant material (aluminum and plastic) and easy to clean.

2. Toilet raiser (toilet lift)

The raiser increases the height of the toilet, making it easier to sit down and stand up, ideal after hip or knee surgery. Key features:

  • Height: Usually 6, 10, or 15 cm. Greater height means less effort, but more instability if the person is short.
  • With or without a lid, and with handles if extra support is needed when standing up.
  • Tool-free installation and compatible with most toilets.

Unsure about the correct height? We cover it in detail in our guide to toilet raiser heights and measurements: how to choose the toilet lift.

3. Commode chair

If the person cannot easily reach the bathroom, a commode chair with a removable bucket solves the problem in any room, with hygiene and discretion.

Extra tips for a safe bathroom

  • Add grab bars in the shower and toilet area.
  • Use non-slip mats.
  • Keep the floor dry and frequently used items at hand level.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, a shower chair or a stool?

If the person needs more stability and comfort, a chair with a backrest and handles is better. If space is limited and they have good balance, a stool without a backrest is sufficient.

What height of toilet raiser do I need?

It depends on the effort required to sit and the person's height. 10 cm risers are the most versatile; 15 cm risers reduce effort more but should be combined with handles for greater safety.

What is a commode chair used for?

It allows for comfortable and dignified toileting in any room when the person cannot easily access the bathroom, thanks to its removable bucket.
